CLdN Cargo launches its own Italian rail connection to play a role in the decarbonisation of freight transport. The new service will start as from 14th of February.

For more than five years, CLdN Cargo has been active in Italy providing high quality intermodal transport services to Northern Europe with their own fleet of 5,500 trailer – and container units. Now further steps are taken to expand the Italian activities. Starting Monday February 14, CLdN Cargo will launch its own intermodal rail connection between Rotterdam and Montirone (Italy). The service will initially operate three times a week connecting CLdN’s own Rotterdam ro-ro terminal with the Magli Intermodal Service (MIS) Terminal in Montirone, 13 km south of Brescia. This intermodal connection will move CLdN Cargo’s own trailer and container equipment combined with other types of equipment sourced by CLdN’s forwarding division.

MIS Terminal

The area of Brescia is ideally located for all northern Italian transports and offers quick connections to the motorways and the main Italian cities. The MIS Terminal has been upgraded and refurbished in 2021 to facilitate longer trains and increased handling capacity. ‘We are very proud to have CLdN Cargo as one of the first clients of the MIS Terminal in Montirone. For us it proofs that the 20 million euro investment in the terminal pays off’, said a representative of MIS.

The next step

‘It has been on our wish list for a long time to have a rail connection to Italy under our own control’, said a representative of CLdN Cargo. This next step follows the December announcement when CLdN Cargo appointed an exclusive commercial agent to increase their presence in the Italian market. ‘Securing rail capacity is vital in this market with the increasing Italian volumes as well as the upcoming mobility package which will only boost unaccompanied rail and ro-ro traffic’, said a spokesperson of CLdN Cargo. ‘We are committed to play our role in the decarbonisation of freight transport. With this transalpine link we can offer our clients a real opportunity to reduce emissions.

Rail: the backbone of low carbon transport

Due to its capacity and speed, rail is the ideal solution for long distance freight transports. Being the modality with one of the lowest CO2 emissions per tonne-km, rail transport paves the ground for further development of CLdN Cargo in the Italian market. CLdN group has the ambition to continue to invest in sustainable multimodal transport such as rail and ro–ro shipping. CLdN RoRo, sister company of CLdN Cargo which is generally used for shortsea shipment of CLdN Cargo’s equipment,
is currently the top performer amongst its ro-ro shipping peers in Northwest Europe for CO2 emissions per tonne of freight carried as per a recent public ‘MRV’ data analysis, audited by PwC.
